Starting to think about @openstudioscornwall which will now be taking place at the end of August. In my virtual open studio on a couple of days it was all about Barn Owls against busy abstract backgrounds as I was thinking about the way in which they and other wildlife has to navigate our noisy modern world... My paintings are often informed by poetry if not directly responding to it... Here is And Owl by Ted Hughes Floats, a masked soul listening for death. Death listening for a soul. Small mouths and their incriminations are suspended. Only the centre moves. Constellations stand in a we. And the trees very still, the fields very still As the Owl becalms deeper To stillness. Two eyes, fixed in the heart of heaven. Nothing is neglected, in the Owl's stare. The womb opens and the cry comes And the shadow of the creature Circumscribes its fate. And the Owl Screams, again ripping the bandages off Because of the shape of its throat, as if it were a torture Because of the shape of its face, as if it were a prison Because of the shape of its talons, as if they were inescapable Heaven screams. Earth screams. Heaven eats. Earth is eaten. And earth eats and heaven is eaten. . . . . . #openstudio @openstudioscornwall #studiotour #virtualopenstudio #openstudios

From my previous post... this is the end if the poem by Ted Hughes ... so often so desolate... I love his poems and hate them all at the same time In a kitchen. The moustached goblin savage Nested in a scarf. The bright blank 50 Blind, like an angel, to my meat-crumbs and flies. Then eyelids resting. Wasted clingers curled. The inevitable balsa death. Finally burial For the husk Of my little Apollo - The charred scream Folded in its huge power #swiftawarenessweek
via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CB_HGUyH3NX/
Swifts by Ted Hughes Fifteenth of May. Cherry blossom. The swifts Materialise at the tip of a long scream Of needle. 'Look! They're back! Look!' And they're gone On a steep Controlled scream of skid Round the house-end and away under the cherries. Gone. Suddenly flickering in sky summit, three or four together, Gnat-whisp frail, and hover-searching, and listening For air-chills - are they too early? With a bowing Power-thrust to left, then to right, then a flicker they Tilt into a slide, a tremble for balance, Then a lashing down disappearance Behind elms. They've made it again, Which means the globe's still working, the Creation's Still waking refreshed, our summer's Still all to come - And here they are, here they are again Erupting across yard stones Shrapnel-scatter terror. Frog-gapers, Speedway goggles, international mobsters - A bolas of three or four wire screams Jockeying across each other On their switchback wheel of death. They swat past, hard-fletched, Veer on the hard air, toss up over the roof, And are gone again. Their mole-dark labouring, Their lunatic limber scramming frenzy And their whirling blades Sparkle out into blue - Not ours any more. Rats ransacked their nests so now they shun us. Round luckier houses now They crowd their evening dirt-track meetings, Racing their discords, screaming as if speed-burned, Head-height, clipping the doorway With their leaden velocity and their butterfly lightness, Their too much power, their arrow-thwack into the eaves. Every year a first-fling, nearly-flying Misfit flopped in our yard, Groggily somersaulting to get airborne. 40 He bat-crawled on his tiny useless feet, tangling his flails Like a broken toy, and shrieking thinly Till I tossed him up - then suddenly he flowed away under His bowed shoulders of enormous swimming power, Slid away along levels wobbling On the fine wire they have reduced life to, And crashed among the raspberries. Then followed fiery hospital hours tbc. #swiftawarenessweek

I have been doing a lot of research about these little chaps and about best practice for rehabilitation and release... there is a lot of mixed advice, but all very interesting, so now time to widen their diet and get that flying and feeding thing up to scratch... for me I have to learn to let go at the right moment! ... They are so amazing each has a completely different personality one is a bit more juvenile in appearance than the other 2 and still needing more feeding on the beam. They are also training me and very adept at communicating with me ,this is what happens when you offer food and they are full up... they turn their back on you π brilliant and perfect could not be clearer ❤❤❤ #westcornwallwildlife #wildliferescue #wildliferehab

This painting is called After the Rain... when the clouds clear, everything is lush and there is often a particular vivid green in the landscape and a darkness to the moorland still saturated, I felt this began to capture it. Here is one of the paintings from my May Bird of the Month... there have been lots of swallows over the field here today. I made it last June during a 30 day challenge where I made a painting a day for 30 days.... fun but oddly exhausting. It was part of a fundraising sale which I love to do... if my artwork can support wildlife then it all feels pretty perfect to me ❤

Red River Valley, I overlook this valley, the Red River rises here and then flows down to the coast, in my view there are always crows, small ones today but it has been sung about too... well maybe not this one but still, I rather like the Stevie Nick's version. Here are the lyrics From this valley they say you are leaving We shall miss your bright eyes and sweet smile For you take with you all of the sunshine That has brightened our pathway a while Then come sit by my side if you love me Do not hasten to bid me adieu Just remember the Red River Valley And the cowboy that's loved you so true For a long time, my darlin', I've waited For the sweet words you never would say Now at last all my fond hopes have vanished For they say that you're going away Then come sit by my side if you love me Do not hasten to bid me adieu Just remember the Red River Valley And the cowboy that's loved you so true on my website just now, part of the #artistsupportpledge and 30% to west Cornwall wildlife rescue volunteers to help build more aviaries, for vet treatment and feeding hungry rescued birds... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Solstice which is actually a moment in time at 21.43 tonight offers a point of reflection for many on all that has grown out of the seeds of your intentions that back in midwinter: and to celebrate our achievements and count our blessings, then look ahead: to what we want to take forward in to the next half of the year. Solstice also known as Litha marks midsummer. Until now, the sun has been waxing and nature's energy building: now reaching its pinnacle, but it's also means that the cycle must continue and the dark half of the year is on the horizon. At the summer solstice, the Oak King surrenders his crown to the Holly King, the sun starts to wane, night slowly begins to lengthen.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Rook linocut on paper... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #everydaymagic #seasonalchange #solstice #litha #linocut.#printmaking #blockprinting #monoprint #utbanbird #contemporaryart #birdart #birdartist #wildbird #contemporaryprintmaking #get_imprinted #ukprintmakers .#magpieart #printmaker #oneofforiginal

This is one of the drawings I did of the Lambs. I've tried to take a mindful approach and allow myself off to explore the shape and texture of the lamb with the ink from a perspective of learning about it, trying all the time to suspend judgement until I was finished. I find that drawing helps me to see things and be completely present (because I tend to be a little distracted by everything else is going on) but when I'm drawing I become quite centred and it seems to quiet my mind and focus my attention completely on my subject. It often feels trans like and I feel quiet tired, like I am waking up aftr a nap after a period of drawing.

The story of a painting... I was lighting a fire in a metal incinerator and suddenly became aware of a presence through the smoke, just sat on the wall looking through the smoke... I quote this poem a lot... but it was held in my mind as I painted as was my encounter... The Owl Who Comes The owl who comes through the dark to sit in the black boughs of the apple tree and stare down the hook of his beak, dead silent, and his eyes, like two moons in the distance, soft and shining under their heavy lashes- like the most beautiful life- is thinking of nothing as he watches and waits to see what might appear, briskly, out of the seamless, deep winter- out of the teeming world below- and if I wish the owl luck, and I do, what am I wishing for that other soft life, climbing through the snow? What we must do, I suppose is to hope the world keeps its balance: what we are to do, however, with our hearts waiting and watching-truly I do not know. The story behind this painting...I was watching a sport competition near a beach in Cornwall, it was busy, lots of people and noise, swallows and martins were flying through the crowds trying to continue their daily business of feeding their young, they would pass through the people at head height, dipping and turning, I felt sad for them, the people were making their lives so much more challenging and they didnt even notice their beauty... I often feel that though...the background is the representation of our tumultuous world behind a celebration of these incredible birds. Work and Play by Ted Hughes The swallow of summer, she toils all the summer, A blue-dark knot of glittering voltage, A whiplash swimmer, a fish of the air. But the serpent of cars that crawls through the dust In shimmering exhaust Searching to slake Its fever in ocean Will play and be idle or else it will bust. The swallow of summer, the barbed harpoon, She flings from the furnace, a rainbow of purples, Dips her glow in the pond and is perfect. But the serpent of cars that collapsed on the beach Disgorges its organs A scamper of colours Which roll like tomatoes Nude as tomatoes With sand in their creases To cringe in the sparkle of rollers and screech. The swallow of summer, the seamstress of summer, She scissors the blue into shapes and she sews it, She draws a long thread and she knots it at the corners. But the holiday people Are laid out like wounded Flat as in ovens Roasting and basting With faces of torment as space burns them blue Their heads are transistors Their teeth grit on sand grains Their lost kids are squalling While man-eating flies Jab electric shock needles but what can they do? They can climb in their cars with raw bodies, raw faces And start up the serpent And headache it homeward A car full of squabbles And sobbing and stickiness With sand in their crannies Inhaling petroleum That pours from the foxgloves While the evening swallow The swallow of summer, cartwheeling through crimson, Touches the honey-slow river and turning Returns to the hand stretched from under the eaves - A boomerang of rejoicing shadow #swallows #swallowpainting #tedhughespoem

My painting of the day "Acrobats of the Sky". This painting is a celebration of lapwings it is one of my greatest pleasures to see a cloud of them rise over Hayle Estuary as I pass in my car... I sometimes and not often enough stop to watch them... but I see them as with all wildlife from a contemporary perspective with all the noise and turmoil of our world, I block out the bits I dont like to see the houses, cars, litter, endless developments etc. And just absorb myself in the lapwings and the sky ... It's on my website if you would like to see more about it. Link in my profile π There is also a poem Two Pewits, by Edward Thomas: Under the after-sunset sky Two pewits sport and cry, More white than is the moon on high Riding the dark surge silently; More black than earth. Their cry Is the one sound under the sky. They alone move, now low, now high, And merrily they cry To the mischievous Spring sky, Plunging earthward, tossing high, Over the ghost who wonders why So merrily they cry and fly, Nor choose 'twixt earth and sky, While the moon's quarter silently Rides, and earth rests as silently

I am going to try to share a painting with its story each day... because they always have a story ... and I dont very often talk about it... this one is in part as they all are about my surroundings, rural Cornwall, there are always crows here...I love to watch them, but they are always against a backdrop of our contemporary busy world of cars, tractors, farming, dogs people, music, lights etc yet they somehow sit outside it in a magical ancient world. I love Ted Hushes poems about Crows this paintings title comes from this one a black rainbow. Two Legends Black was the without eye Black the within tongue Black was the heart Black the liver, black the lungs Unable to suck in light Black the blood in its loud tunnel Black the bowels packed in furnace Black too the muscles Striving to pull out into the light Black the nerves, black the brain With its tombed visions Black also the soul, the huge stammer Of the cry that, welling, could not Pronounce its sun. II Black is the wet otter's head, lifted. Black is the rock, plunging in foam Black is the gall lying on the bed of the blood. Black is the earth-globe, one inch under, An egg of blackness Where sun and moon alternate their weathers To hatch a crow, a black rainbow Bent in emptiness over emptiness But flying Its also a part ofvthe #artistsupportpledge #tedhughes #crow #rook #criwpoem #crowart #crowpainting
