I have been neglecting my printmaking again... I am painting this Rook on canvas I met him at @wwtslimbridge he had a particularly confident walk and lots of character. I think his yellow plinth should be a box of warm sun that he will let out any moment... hopefully! Linocut with monoprint on paper.

This was one of my first with the patterned busy world background it's only small 30 x 30 cm on board, still finding this way of working very new, exciting and strangely scary...but full of potential, I now have another 6 backgrounds in progress for some crows 😊

This painting was from Day 7 of my #30dayswild project in June it was one of my favourite paintings of the series, a tawny owl, I hear them fairly regularly and occasionally catch sight of them here. I am hoping to repaint it in acrylic and mixed media today ... I will let you know how it goes!

The Poem that I was thinking about when I poseted the Sparrow Hawk earlier was The Owl Who Comes by Mary Oliver and it goes like this... The owl who comes through the dark to sit in the black boughs of the apple tree and stare down the hook of his beak, dead silent, and his eyes, like two moons in the distance, soft and shining under their heavy lashes— like the most beautiful lie— is thinking of nothing as he watches and waits to see what might appear, briskly, out of the seamless, deep winter— out of the teeming world below— and if i wish the owl luck, and I do, what am I wishing for that other soft life, climbing through the snow? what we must do, I suppose, is to hope the world keeps its balance; what we are to do, however, with our hearts waiting and watching—truly I do not know. ~ Mary Oliver She speaks so eloquantly, without judgement, she offers words which help me understand the harshness and simultaneous beauty of nature

Oystercatchers lino cut with monoprin. There are some lovely stories about these birds. One in which Brigid (adopted by the Christian church as St Bridget or St Bride, but to the Gaels is an emblem of St. Bride) carried one in each hand. Legend has her arriving on the shores of South Uist with an oystercatcher on each wrist. When she was becalmed at sea, oystercatchers flew to her boat and by the beating of their wings, filled the sails of the boat so that she could sail safely to land. In Gaelic, the Oystercacher is called the Guide of St Bride, as she was supposed to send the birds to guide sailors to safety. It also bears the form of a cross on its plumage and for Christian's this is important as it once covered Christ with sea-weed when his enemies pursued him. .

I have taken part in a little painting exercise led online by @louisefletcher_art it is a great way to explore colour palettes as the seasons change and the spring colours mellow. No pressure to make a 'good painting' as I used cheap paper and made a mess with the masking tape .. I teach a very similar thing but never do them for myself so it has been lovely to be just playful...
