A Kite this time I don't see many of them in Cornwall...but it is always a good reason to visit mid Wales! Still digitally collaging paintings over backgrounds... which means until I have the time for a sustained period of painting I can still play with my ideas 😊

I was doing a little Buzzard watching on my way home, soaring over newly cut fields. I think if i could be a bird I would be a buzzard, the seem to spend most of their time watching the world go by or playing in the thermals. Which bird would you be I would love to know?

I found another nest about 3ft off the ground behind the green netting in a crevice in the wall... Any ideas ??? Thinking possibly great tit or sparrow as both were watching and making a noise as I approached...

Everyone except the dog and feral cats in this one, lambs not really wanting to be too close to the sheep who keep chasing them off... 😣

Times of failure are always good for analysis 😊 so now I know that this image more clearly articulates my ideas about the world our wildlife navigate and the way they appear to us as fleeting treasured glimpses.... .

Well! Not very impressed with my screen printing efforts! Too photographic for my liking I think, i will probably chop them up and make them into cards or sketchbook pages...although they look better on here than in the studio, maybe they just don't look like my work #failfast #failoften 😂

Sitting in the conservatory watching birds and listening to the world ... whilst i look through images to post today... I live in a rural part of cornwall but at this time of day the road is quite busy, the birds just do their thing regardless... starlings...

@elliegregor sent me another photo of her office at Walters & Barbary solicitors the painting is of Bewick's Swans who are the smallest of our swans. They arrive in autumn from Siberia where they breed I usually like to take a little trip to @wwtslimbridge each year...

Gorgeous evening here in Cornwall ❤

Swift... I have them fly around here in small numbers one or 2 but when I went to Tavira last year they were everywhere nesting on the taller buildings, wheeling around and screeching.. wonderful...'materialise at the top of a long scream' as Ted Hughes describes them

Staying with the same background and magpies... i really enjoy this creative process... so many options and possibilities... using all the mixed media options! collage, lino cut, abstracted (busy world) painted landscape and screen print ...
via Instagram http://bit.ly/2Eks8sH
It has been a while since I shared a magpie, I have a beautiful pair nesting in my garden and eating me out of house and fat balls. I love to watch them trying to balance on the feeder whilst getting the maximum amount of food in their mouths...
via Instagram http://bit.ly/2VRdVyj
I like the lapwing here... I have a type of landscape in mind for each species... although I see them all within a few miles of home... I enjoy the conversations my mind has with my hands and eyes as I move things around. This pocess has memory I used to do this when I was very young... " It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child." Picasso ... not that I have ever painted like Raphael 😂

I am going to re-start writing a short monthly newsletter and wondered what would be interesting to those of you who would subscribe? The image is basically a visual representation of me... 😁 so would; My process and thoughts around my practice, insights into what i am looking for in my work and how i hope to achieve it? Or as I am also a lecturer on a multidisciplinary BA so bits of teaching, workshops etc. my inspiration and broader life including my smallholding, sheep etc. Or finished work exhibitions etc. A round up of all of tgat or something else. What would be of most interest? Which newsletters do you find most interesting?

A slightly different barn owl in ink and wash, hunting... these are such and fun to do, I love Indian ink to work with, spontaneous and slightly unpredictable when using a homemade quill, concentrating on setting judgement aside and just drawing the energy 😊. . . . . . #barnowl #britishbirds #owl #owlsofinstagram #owls #wildlife #lovenature #farmlandbird #humananimalrelationship #contmeporarypainting #mixedmedia #illustration #drawing #ink #painting #gallerywall #picturegallery #dreamhome #farmhouseliving #countryliving #countryinteriors

Reading a post about body image by @bethanysrobinson I remembered this Poem it talks about Queen Owl Wings... which means I can share another Barn Owl ! its a beautiful poem about age... our scars and wrinkles are a map of our lives... well thats what I think anyway... BENEATHER THE SWEATER AND THE SKIN How many years of beauty do I have left? she asks me. How many more do you want? Here. Here is 34. Here is 50. When you are 80 years old and your beauty rises in ways your cells cannot even imagine now and your wild bones grow luminous and ripe, having carried the weight of a passionate life. When your hair is aflame with winter and you have decades of learning and leaving and loving sewn into the corners of your eyes and your children come home to find their own history in your face. When you know what it feels like to fail ferociously and have gained the capacity to rise and rise and rise again. When you can make your tea on a quiet and ridiculously lonely afternoon and still have a song in your heart Queen owl wings beating beneath the cotton of your sweater. Because your beauty began there beneath the sweater and the skin, remember? This is when I will take you into my arms and coo YOU BRAVE AND GLORIOUS THING you've come so far. I see you. Your beauty is breathtaking. ~ Jeannette Encinias

Another old Barn Owl painting ... my interests have not changed but the conversation I am trying to have through my work has shifted I think... also available as a card... I think it is time to update my collection of greetings cards but it would be hard to let this one go as it has always been very popular 😊

This wise old owl is in good company nestled between law society certificates in @elliegregors office casting his eye over proceedings! Ellie says he brightens up her office. As it’s mental health awareness week Ellie thought it would be apt to start a blog with a post about mental health in the workplace and how surrounding yourself with things you love can help. #mentalhealthawarenessweek

I love to see my work in situ and i especially love to hear about how it makes people feel...if you have my work on your walls at home or at work , I would love to see it. #Repost @elliegregor • • • • • • How many of you spend most of your week in an office? I spend 40-50 hours a week in mine which is made much better by the beautiful artwork by @ssharpeart and my many office plants 🌱... As it’s mental health awareness week i thought it would be apt to start my blog with a blog about mental health in the workplace and how surrounding yourself with things you love can make those long hours staring at 4 walls much easier. Another little round up... out of interest what size is ideal do you think? Larger statement piece 80 x 80 cm, 50 x 50cm or smaller 30 x 30 cm . In cornwall we have a lot of small cottages with low ceilings but I know this us not necessarily the case for most people... what are the houses like in your area ??

I do like the structure created by the dark areas .although I am not entirely happy with the shape of my owl in this one but. looking forward to working on a larger scale when I will have room to be a little more expressive I am not great at working small ...

Grrrr.... Feeling slightly frustrated... these are all basically sketchbook experiments, but at this point I start to want to see real progress...proper finished pieces, even though I deliberately used scrapy bits of cheap paper so I could not start thinking of the exhibitable finished pieces 😂🤣😂 always fighting my own thoughts!!!!!! Is anyone else like this ? Oh oystercatchers at Godrevy in cornwall...

More Barn owls ... I am definitely working too small at the moment but interested to watch them unfold lots of unexpected happy accidents to build on ... maybe... 😁

Starlings...this time, in summer a few starling hang around i see them in the local village, against a backdrop of power lines and traffic noise... so trying to communicate that and that regardless of the modern world around them, they are still one of the highlights of my day!

Curlew...such a fantastic site l I love to see the flying but also love their mournful song... this is one of the first of my new work to exist in its entirety beyond the computer as an actual painting, all be it on a scrappy bit of A4 cartridge paper... looking forward now to working on a slightly larger scale...

Starling linocut with screenprinting, collage and painting
via Instagram http://bit.ly/2Lqx1pW
I am finding I like the pieces with a fairly strong area of dark and a bit of structure.. there is always a pole, road, shed or path in the landscape so these I think begin to represent that ... the more I look at them the more I think they are like the Landscape as seen when driven through ...

As i have been working very intuitively without exact purposeful outcomes in mind, it is lovely to discover bits if detail ... starting to sketch some birds for these backgrounds

Something a little darker... beautiful starry night here in Cornwall... I find at dusk my senses are heightened, sometimes my eyes are not as reliable as the could be...shapes move and change, but with a flash of white and a screech... I realise I just missed the Barn Owl...

And just because i want to share some poetry by Mary Oliver here is another Owl Coming down out of the freezing sky with its depths of light, like an angel, or a Buddha with wings, it was beautiful, and accurate, striking the snow and whatever was there with a force that left the imprint of the tips of its wings—five feet apart— and the grabbing thrust of its feet, and the indentation of what had been running through the white valleys of the snow— and then it rose, gracefully, and flew back to the frozen marshes to lurk there, like a little lighthouse, in the blue shadows— so I thought: maybe death isn’t darkness, after all, but so much light wrapping itself around us— as soft as feathers— that we are instantly weary of looking, and looking, and shut our eyes, not without amazement, and let ourselves be carried, as through the translucence of mica, to the river that is without the least dapple or shadow, that is nothing but light—scalding, aortal light— in which we are washed and washed out of our bones.. . . . . . . . #wip #illustration #wildlifepainting #adoseofnature #barnowl #wildbird #contemporaryprintmaking #humananimalrelationship #contemporaryart #sketchbook #inthestudio #collageart #creativityandplay #camoflage #anthrozoology #abstractlandscape #acryiicpainting. #landscapepainting #cornishfields #cornwallpainting #mixedmediapainting #contemporarylandscapepainting #cornwallart #cornishfarm #farmlandbird #winsorandnewtonacrylics #screenprinting

Another Barn Owl ... appearing and disappearing in the same moment barely seen ... And a poem by RS Thomas BARN OWL Mostly it is a pale face hovering in the afterdraught of the spirit, making both ends meet on a scream. It is the breath of the churchyard, the forming of white frost in a believer, when he would pray; it is soft feathers camouflaging a machine. It repeats itself year after year in its offspring, the staring pupils it teaches its music to, that is the voice of God in the darkness cursing himself fiercely for his lack of love. ii. and there the owl happens like white frost as cruel and as silent and the time on its blank face is not now so the dead have nothing to go by and are fast or slow but never punctual as the alarm is over their bleached bones of its night-strangled cry. by R. S. Thomas from The Way of It (1977)

Happy May Day, Labour day, Beltane or what ever you choose to call it... I personally love this time of year lots of bird activity and glorious hedge row colours which I held in my mind whilst painting this background. In cornwall we have a number of May celebrations, related to fertility and spring today is Padstow Obby Oss, fantastic traditions, dance and rituals combined...
