November 30 Day Challenge. Landscapes?
Well I am now 11 days into my November challenge, 3 paintings (or pieces of work) a day for 30 days. I have to confess it looked like a mountain on day 1 but I am feeling reassured that I have been successful so far. This time I am trying to incorporate more variety both in subject matter and media again I am not doing too badly..I have used thick acrylic with a knife, collage and monoprinting. In terms of subject matter I am trying to paint more groups of birds, some landscapes and objects in the landscape and also some animals that I am not completely familiar with. I have found that unfamiliar subject matter and unfamiliar media are a bad combination…toooooo stressful and posting landscape paintings and drawings is also very very very challenging as it is way out of my comfort zone. This also raises another point, I am not doing the challenge to sell work, more to affirm a work ethic and a habitual practice, however it is nice when the paintings do sell and great because it means that we are supporting some amazing charities. I find I get a little miserable when I have no sales in a day…and then I worry that I am not going to meet me fundraising target (which only I know!) So none of my landscapes found new homes, do I do more or just decide that I do animals and others do landscapes…? The problem is that landscapes complete the circle for me, I am out a lot walking and want to record my experiences, I am often disappointed with my landscape sketches and thought I would use the challenge to work through this………well by the end of the challenge I will have made a choice one way or another! Printmaking this afternoon I think...if I can get to my studio though the rain :) This is a Monoprint I did a while ago, monoprinting is a great medium for producing 1 off images by means of transferring and an ink or oil painted drawing from a sheet of glass (or other impermeable surface) to paper. It somehow doesn't seem fitting to continue as usual with my 30 day challenge, my feather, pencils, brushes and ink will be still for today. Whilst I remember everyone lost in all War and conflict throughout the world today, I also remember the animals who gave their lives in our service. There are many stories and many animals who received medals and awards. One of US homing pigeons, named Cher Ami, was awarded the French "Croix de Guerre with Palm" for heroic service delivering 12 important messages during the Battle of Verdun. On her final mission in October 1918, she delivered a message despite having been shot through the breast and wing. The message was found in the capsule hanging from the ligament of her shattered leg and saved about 200 US soldiers. So instead I am sharing 3 of my drawings from my final MA project, one part of which looked at the extinction of the Passenger Pigeon (also 100 years ago in 2014) and our symbiotic relationship with its cousins.

Rare Breed Sheep
In preparation for Royal Cornwall Show this year, I am doing a series of Sheep drawings, there has been record sheep entries so I thought it appropriate…I will be resident in the Rare Breeds Survival Trust tent again in just a few weeks time.
I also hope to make some of them into a small book(let), but that may be a project for next year.
In the meantime here is a sketch of a Boreray Ram there are fewer that 300 of these sheep and therefore Critical on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust watch list.

Pigeons
Pigeons have always fascinated me, when I lived in a town they were considered a pest...there would be reports of 'Dangerous Pigeons' nearly taking someone's eye out! but, at the same time there would be people who came to feed them every day...and took pleasure in the relationship they had with them.
The relationship between humans and animals is often a complex and symbiotic one, Pigeons seem to exemplify this relationship. One the one hand they have been heroic and on the other pests. As I try to explore this I have drawn some amazing creatures...Martha the last Passenger Pigeon, GI Joe, Cher Ami, Old Kaizer, Gimpy, Long John Silver...etc.

Fantastic Sunny day...if a little on the cold side!
I went on a great boat trip from Falmouth to Truro and back, mostly to watch a birds, almost immediately we met with a Razor Bill in the Harbour, lots and lots of Cormorants, Shags and the the ubiquitous Gulls. As we turned into the river Fal we were treated to a spectacular display by a Gannet circling and diving, fending off the gulls with ease who tried to steal its catch...I am not sure I have ever been so cold though.
I wanted to draw it but unfortunately my ability to work with cold hands is not great.
Whilst in Falmouth we also called into the Cider Festival where I did do a little sketching...particularly great to see The Falmouth Session https://www.facebook.com/thefalmouthsession and the Lloyd Yates Band https://www.facebook.com/LloydYatesBand .

The Beautiful and the Damned continued.....more works in progress
I am currently Studying MA Authorial Illustration at Falmouth University. I am working with ideas of the Human Animal relationship, at the forefront of my mind at the moment is the quote "Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” Martin Luther King. and the idea that what we do to others we do to ourselves. These images all carry narratives that are of interest to me, although it is unlikely that they will be presented with any text...I am working towards creating a Bestiary or between 6 and 12 creatures...all sketches and workings out at the moment, but it does me good to put them on here!

Maenporth coastal walk
Another lovely coastal walk this time from Maenporth Beach, after being encouraged down a very steep cliff with now path insight I was rewarded with a beautiful deep cave, with fantastic rock formations and colouring.

After negotiating my way back to the top we walked west along the coast path to find a large gathering of Cormornats and Shags, with a fe Oycester Catchers and 3 Curlew.
Around another bend we heard the call of a Peregrine as it flew to a resting point on a rock out crop. No photo unfortunately...but I do have some of textures and lines, I always feel that it is difficult to decided on the scale of images like this, it could be a rock face or a small stone...
And a couple of Cormorants this one seen a year or so ago around Padstow.
