Something nice and dark today for #samhain #allhallowseve #haloween to me it's the beginning of winter (if there were only 2 seasons) but also a time to reflect, celebrate things passed and look at what we want to take forward... the painting is called 'we reap what we sow' and is based on the ovid poem about Actaeon.
I have not been able to get into my studio for what seems like ages I think partly because of the clocks going back which seems to mean I am much busier trying to get things done .... so another one for #throwbackthursay a collage from a few years ago

I am fascinated by drawing in all its forms and purposes, here I was recording at an archaeological restoration project where I also joined in with the dig, peeling back layers of time the experience will stay with me for the rest of my life the quoit at Carwynnen was reinstated after being collapsed for many years...

Badgers on my mind again...I have just read some amazing news, a project called the Gatcomb project which really needs to be shared far and wide discovered the following " one thing we noticed was that the only cows going down with TB were the milkers that were housed 365 days a year and never had any contact with badgers,” these beautiful persecuted creatures and our cows need a solution maybe this is it. Do look it up if you are interested it's very interesting 🖤🦡🖤🦡🖤.

More sketchbook work... I like the freedom in the markmaling in this one ... it's a gateway but not obviously so...limiting palette also works well fore and I use it a lot in my teaching because it clarifies things for students

Although my landscape sketches dont often have birds in them they usually have them passing in the landscape somewhere... I wrote on his one distant buzzard calling... but there were probably many other birds present at sometime 😊

#worldmentalhealrhday Nature and bird watching are so good for our mental health ... it takes us put of ourselves. Acrobats of the sky...lapwings, this painting was inspired by my experience of these wonderful birds and poetry, Mary Oliver refers to "starlings in winter" as acrobats and I felt it applied to lapwings as well... there are often flocks around the @rspb_love_nature reserve at hayle estuary...I must ensure I catch up with them again this year...

The horses where part of a series from 2006... it was a time of change for me... I dont paint horses often now so it must seem like a very different type of work, but the themes of the relationship between humans and animal and their importance in our lives both metaphorically and physically ...remain the same

Horses signify freedom and travel so this amazing poem which has particular meaning for me seems a good fit with my running horses The journey One day you finally knewwhat you had to do, and began, though the voices around youkept shoutingtheir bad advice --though the whole housebegan to trembleand you felt the old tugat your ankles."Mend my life!"each voice cried. But you didn't stop. You knew what you had to do,though the wind priedwith its stiff fingersat the very foundations, though their melancholywas terrible. It was already lateenough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallenbranches and stones. But little by little,as you left their voice behind, the stars began to burnthrough the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voicewhich you slowlyrecognized as your own, that kept you companyas you strode deeper and deeperinto the world, determined to dothe only thing you could do --determined to savethe only life that you could save. Mary Oliver . . . The painting is available as a greetings card from my website, link in profile

#worldpoetryday One of my favourites The owl who comes. Mary Oliver The owl who comes through the dark to sit in the black boughs of the apple tree and stare down the hook of his beak, dead silent, and his eyes, like two moons in the distance, soft and shining under their heavy lashes- like the most beautiful life- is thinking of nothing as he watches and waits to see what might appear, briskly, out of the seamless, deep winter- out of the teeming world below- and if I wish the owl luck, and I do, what am I wishing for that other soft life, climbing through the snow? What we must do, I suppose is to hope the world keeps its balance: what we are to do, however, with our hearts waiting and watching-truly I do not know.
