In a very short time I will be off to Wales for a 4 day stay on Skokholm Island, home (with its sister island Skomer Island) to around 20 % of the world population of Storm Petrels. This painting is of an extinct Guadalupe Petrel painted for the Ghosts of Gone Birds live studio.

Well I am not exactly collaging...:/ but it all okay! I am in my studio, the recording of the seasons somehow became urgent as I noticed a lot of wild-flowers going to seed :)

This is one of the paintings from quite a long time ago which began my fascination with patterned backgrounds, the pattern is a stand in or metaphor for civilisation/humans etc.

I absolutely adore Illuminated Manuscripts...and found these amazing facts whilst reading about them. 'Although paper was available in southern Europe from the twelfth century, its use did not become widespread until the late Middle Ages - there was no paper mill in England until the fifteenth century. Before this the usual support for writing was parchment (also known as vellum), made from stretched, treated animal skins. A large manuscript might require one whole cow- or sheep-skin to make a folded sheet of two to four pages, and a thick book could require the hides of entire herds. Medieval books were therefore expensive items.'
