Back for a visit again...on an atmospheric morning. W535 waiting for me when I went out to feed the remaining few in my care. I hope you are still looking out for our (@westcornwallwildlife) released colour ringed Gulls they have a big plastic blue ring with a code starting W the ones I have released have all be in the 500-550 number range but we are interested to hear about any of them as they are part of a PHD research project with Exeter Uni.
Jackdaws caught in the act bringing their new friends to breakfast.... I released 4 Jackdaws and now have a group of 7 and 2 magpies to support 🤣 it's all good, I feed the birds anyway... it's only a bit of supplementary food and they are all welcome.

I have popped my paintings on paper back onto my website after open studios there are still one or two of these landscapes if you feel like treating yourself... I am looking forward to responding to the autumn colours again soon. . #landscape #abstractlandscapepainting #cornwallladscapepainting

This Jackdaw painting gives me the opportunity to tell you that all of the lovely Jackdaws I cared for and released on the 22nd August were sat in the open aviary this afternoon bless them. Although they are not tame and leave as soon as they see me which is always good. I have moved their daily feeds to a table outside now, but they obviously just like to hang around in there. Fortunately i don't need it for anything else at the moment so they are very welcome to spend as much time as they like 🖤🖤🖤 #jackdawpainting #wildliferehab #wildliferelease #helpwildlife

For me it was lovely thank you to everyone who visited virtually or physically 🥰 #Repost @openstudioscornwall • • • • • • And with that, we say farewell to @openstudioscornwall for another year, and what an amazing event it was, despite all the obstacles in our path! It was a subdued affair for some participants, for others it was intensive; either way it was markedly different from previous years. As always, the event provided a chance to make new acquaintances and reunite with former ones, for conversational exchange and human connection, for moments of inspiration, an opportunity to rethink one’s process and work, to secure commissions, and to wave visitors off having made a sale or two. For visitors to gain privileged access to private studios, flick through sketchbooks, handle works in progress, watch an artist at work and question them about what drives their creations. At a time of social restriction and isolation with people unable to access many arts and cultural venues, this year more than ever, it felt vital that we find a way of connecting people together in this way, of facilitating visitors in safely crossing the threshold into another person’s artistic space of production and into different imaginative worlds. Congratulations to all who took part in Open Studios Cornwall 2020, either virtually, physically or both, and many thanks to all those who visited! Thank you for your patience, resilience, and hard work in making your studio spaces safe and visitors feel welcomed. We hope to see you all again next year for 2021!

Whilst on the subject of Owls here is a Tawny Owl... this one called dark wings. I often hear them calling in the winter.

This one is on my studio wall today for @openstudioscornwall but I thought I would tell its story. I was lighting a fire in a metal incinerator and suddenly became aware of a presence through the smoke, just sat on the wall looking through the smoke... I quote this poem a lot... but it was held in my mind as I painted as was my encounter... The Owl Who Comes The owl who comes through the dark to sit in the black boughs of the apple tree and stare down the hook of his beak, dead silent, and his eyes, like two moons in the distance, soft and shining under their heavy lashes- like the most beautiful life- is thinking of nothing as he watches and waits to see what might appear, briskly, out of the seamless, deep winter- out of the teeming world below- and if I wish the owl luck, and I do, what am I wishing for that other soft life, climbing through the snow? What we must do, I suppose is to hope the world keeps its balance: what we are to do, however, with our hearts waiting and watching-truly I do not know. The North Cliffs with Gulls, always... this dramatic a beautiful stretch of coastline between portreath and Gwithian is home to many seabirds, and one of my favourite places. However it also has a very dark, dangerous, raw and brutal side to it... this kind of polarity always intrigues me...

One of the gulls reared by @westcornwallwildlife and me and released on the 29th August popped back to say hello this evening always lovely to see them... tucked into a nice big piece of fish then tried to get back in the main aviary... 🥰 #wildliferescue #cornwallwildliferescue #helpwildlife

The lovely Jackdaw group were back again this evening for a snack... they seem to announce their arrival as the fly over this is an ink drawing I made many years ago but I have always like the way the ink made just the right marks for me 🖤🖤🖤

I only have this inquisitive Herring Gull painting left of my first set of paintings for my ebook. This was Gull in St Ives that I had a conversation with, I maintained eye contact t with it so it kept its distance whilst I ate my lunch. Their intelligence and understanding is equal to and probably easily surpasses that of a dog... and they are long lived oldest recorded 32 years... they learn fast to exploit our bad habits... and that is part of the reason we conflict because they give us no leeway when we mistakenly (?) Dispose if our rubbish lazily if we imagine if they are equivalent to Bears in Canada we would soon be more cautious! You can read more about them in my July ebook now available for a small donation to my fundraising of £2.50 All on my website #herringgull #redlist #education #humananimalrelationship #artforwildlife #gullresearch #gullprotectors #wildliferehab

Because it's been all about rescuing pigeons with @westcornwallwildlife this last few days here is a Wood Pigeon in flight 😊
via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CEhfZT9nMwK/
This poor young wood pigeon came to me today for a short stay it had been attacked by another bird, they need quite specialist care like most wildlife. So it was a bit like a military manoeuvre today arranging transport and he best care for it, many people at @westcornwallwildlife have full aviaries with injured birds coming in all the time, so this one is now in the very safe hands of Nikki at @littlestwildlifehotel_cornwall

Here is another corner of my studio all quite tidy now...and especially not bad as it was full of birds all summer 😁 for @westcornwallwildlife

Another tiny landscape painting reminding me again of one of my favourite RS Thomas poems the Bright Field...when the sun seems to just shine on one field ☀️ I have seen the sun break through to illuminate a small field for a while, and gone my way and forgotten it. But that was the pearl of great price, the one field that had treasure in it. I realize now that I must give all that I have to possess it. Life is not hurrying on to a receding future, nor hankering after an imagined past. It is the turning aside like Moses to the miracle of the lit bush, to a brightness that seemed as transitory as your youth once, but is the eternity that awaits you.

I am hoping to take part in an exhibition with the @nsanewlyn in the autumn called the edge of darkness... these paintings relate to one of the most beautiful but dangerous parts of our coast. Al'so where I released our Herring gulls into the world a wonderful but very hard time for me... I think it is about opposites existing in one place and one person...the unresolved dicotomy that I experience all too often, these preliminary sketches will be available to see at @@openstudioscornwall. . . . #openstudioscornwall #birdscapes #abstractlandscape #cornwalllandscapepainting

@openstudioscornwall prep sorting out some very small landscapes with tiny birds for my browsers... so much still to do 😬 and so little time. It is very interesting to have all my recent (past 2 years) work in one place to see how it has shifted but also to see the threads of wildlife, human animal relationship, stories and poetry remaining as overriding and endlessly interesting themes

Jackdaw walking linocut with monoprint... I haven't posted much about the jackdaws I have visiting, there are 5 4 youngsters who were raised by another volunteer and 1 adult who had lost his tail feathers. As they are very social creatures I am happy to say that all the local jackdaws come visiting and sit with them on the roof by their aviary... they are having a mini moult at the moment and will be released soon after but probably not from here... I try not to interact with them and they hate to be stared at so I dont feel I know them well but as with all the birds I will miss them when they ho but be happy for them at the same time 🖤🥰🖤 . . . . . #linocut.#printmaking #blockprinting #monoprint #urbanbird #contemporaryart #birdart #birdartist #wildbird #contemporaryprintmaking #get_imprinted #ukprintmakers .#magpieart #printmaker #oneofforiginal #jackdaw

Here is another painting from this series which started during lockdown, inspired by the constant but ever changing landscape around my home. Flying south...although these are crows and jackdaws, as things in the bird world start to shift to thoughts about migration, we are hoping all @westcornwallwildlife volunteers little migratory birds will be fit enough to make their way south... Looking forward to sharing some of this work at @openstudioscornwall in a few weeks
